NOVA SCOTIA

Application Guidelines

All new candidates please click here for an important news flash
The Nova Scotia Board of Examiners in
Psychology reviews the completed application and makes a decision based
on evaluation of the information provided. In some cases, the Board may
request additional information. If the applicant is not approved, the
applicant will be informed in writing. Psychologists already registered
in other jurisdictions may have some of these requirements waived if
adequate documentation is released to NSBEP from that regulatory body.
Application Timelines
Completed
applications must be received two weeks prior to the Board’s monthly
meeting. For information
on Board meeting dates, click here.
Following the Board's review of the
application, applicants will be notified in writing of the Board's
decision typically within 2 weeks.
Once applicants receive approval
notification, they are required to pay the registration fee for the
current year within 30 days. The entire fee for the year is
payable (unless registering after June 30th, in which case
the fee is pro-rated by the amount of months remaining). Registration
then expires on December 31st of the same calendar year and full registration fee is
then due
for the following year.
For a list of the NSBEP fees,
please visit the
Information for Registrants section of the site.
Please note: The
application process is fairly detailed and applicants are encouraged to
begin the application process in advance thereby allowing themselves
sufficient time to complete all requirements. For example, it
can take up to 6 weeks for a Child Abuse Registry Check to be
processed. Also, it can take a considerable amount of time for
applicants to have their reference forms completed and sent to NSBEP.
Applicants submitting
their application or supporting documentation in a language other than
English must have the application and supporting documentation
translated to English by a certified translator.
The following items are required to be filed with NSBEP for a completed
application:
| 1. |
Official Photo Identification (photo
ID) i.e. Driver's license, Passport, etc. - Please do not fax.
A photocopy or scanned copy is acceptable. |
| 2. |
Both a Criminal Record Check and a Child Abuse Registry
Check.
Nova Scotia residents
1) To initiate
the
Child Abuse
Registry Check, please
click here, print off and complete the Consent to Disclosure of
Information Form (B2) and then mail it to the NSBEP office.
The NSBEP mailing address is at the bottom of this page.
Please be aware this check can take 6 weeks to process.
2) To
obtain
a Criminal Record Check, contact your local police, or if your area
is policed by the RCMP, contact them for the check. You'll
need to allow the necessary processing time for this check.
Applicants from outside Nova Scotia
You must ensure a Criminal Record and Child Abuse Check are obtained
from the appropriate authorities in your jurisdiction. In many
jurisdictions, while the police may provide the Criminal Record
Check, another organization (for example, Community Services, Family
Services, Children's Services, etc.) provide the Child Abuse Check
or equivalent (for example,
Intervention Record Check).
The onus is on the applicant to contact the appropriate authorities
in his/her jurisdiction and obtain the required checks, and if applying from a
jurisdiction that does
not maintain a Child Abuse Registry or equivalent, note on the
application documentation that such a check is not available.
All
applicants please note: Both the
Criminal Record and Child Abuse Registry Check must be received before an application will be
approved.
Applicants are advised to allow sufficient processing time,
concerning the required checks, when submitting their application. |
